Ramya Janandharan is PhD student in the Ethnic Studies department at UC Berkeley.  She completed her undergraduate degree at University of Toronto in Peace and Conflict Studies and South Asian Studies and now looks at the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee diaspora, human rights media and intricacies of post-conflict and diasporic identity in her current research.  In particular, she in interested in how this diaspora engages human rights discourses, new media technologies and visual culture in a transnational processing of collective memory and trauma.  Through integrating interdisciplinary methodologies such as ethnography, critical visual methodologies and discourse analysis, her project aims to explore the transnational visual landscape of community identity that diasporic communities such as the Sri Lankan Tamil Canadian community create through cultural production, community formation and interactions with both the homeland and transnational politics.
